Mountain Bike Races in Marin?
May 31, 2008 by TB

Last Tuesday competitive mountain bike racing took place at the old Nike site above the skate board park at McInnis Park in San Rafael. This event was the first in a series hosted by Summit Bicycles in San Rafael called The Summit Shorty (Shorty refers to the short, but challenging course). There are three categories, A. (pro riders do 6 laps) B. (intermediate riders do 5 laps) and C. (beginner riders do 4 laps)

Marin Parks Ranger Rob Ruiz asked me what kind of riders race in the professional category? I said I figured it was anyone who considers him or herself a serious racer, but added that I didn't expect to see any team sponsored riders at the event. Just then a fast moving guy with a big smile and the look of a pro approached rapidly. It was WTB/Santa Cruz rider Mark Weir doing a test lap. Mark went on to win the Category A race in 19 minutes.

The rangers wanted to avoid any injuries and asked if someone would stand at all of the challenging sections to warn riders to be careful. Their request was quickly executed, as many volunteers were on hand to make sure the event was a success. I am happy to report that there was only one crash; a juvenile was thrown to the ground when he hit a rock-strewn section of the concrete Nike launch pad. An adult spectator just a few feet away rushed over to see if the kid was alright. He hopped right up saying, “I’m fine, I’m fine!” and jumped back on his bike to continue the race. It appeared that only his ego was injured.

Jim Hewitt of Summit Bicycles approached Marin County parks about putting on the event and they approved the request for a six-week series. The races happen every Tuesday evening starting at 5 pm, though July 1st. The fee to race is just $10. Summit is putting up the money to cover the permit fees. Prizes are given to the top three finishers in each race.

Jim asks all racers to limit any pre-riding of the course to race day only. He is concerned that if people are riding the course other days of the week, it could threaten future series.

Middle Green Gulch - Uphill Only!
February 13, 2008 by TB

Share the Trail has received reports that mountain bikers are doing DOWN Middle Green Gulch trail, out near Muir Beach.  Middle Green Gulch is open to bikes in the UPHILL direction only.  Please observe the downhill closure in order to avoid having the trail closed to bikes entirely.  The trail runs through the Zen Center and they have been gracious in letting bikes ride through their property.  Let's return the favor and follow the rules.

The proper way to get down off of Coyote Ridge is to head west to Coastal Road, or north to Miwok, and then down Diaz Ridge Trail (see the Coast View map in our Loops and Trails section)

National Mountain Bike Patrol Comes To Marin
December 6th, 2007 by TB

BTC Marin & Access4Bikes are sponsoring a mountain bike patrol in Marin County. The patrol
will begin working within the California State Park Volunteer Program, and will expand to other parks later next year. Eight Mt. bikers have already completed the State Park training and should hit the trails at China Camp in January.

The patrol's contributions will include assisting in the care and transportation of injured persons and educating trail users about safe and low impact riding techniques. The patrol will help maintain safe trails by being alert and reporting hazards, obstacles, and remedies as required.

If you would like to join the patrol contact us at sharethetrail@gmail.com. For more on the program visit www.imba.com/nmbp/

Share the Trail at Deer Park
November 28th, 2007 by TB

Share the Trail set up an outpost at Deer Park in Fairfax last Sunday. Mountain bike legends Charlie Cunningham, Jacquie Phelan and Joe Breeze were among the 40+ mountain bikers who stopped to talk with us. Hikers were thankful of our efforts, and everyone liked the Clif Bars and Shots we were handing out.

New Shared Use Trail on Marin County Open Space
November 28th, 2007 by LL

On a beautiful fall Saturday in late November,
the Top Flight Trail saw it's grand opening, and
the bikers and hikers were there to celebrate.
The trail is on Marin County Open Space in the French Ranch Preserve, and though a short trail (1/2 mile), it was a big construction effort due
to 4 bridges needing to be built in that short distance.

The trail essentially goes behind the San Geronimo Golf Course on the North side, and it is an excellent way to get off the busy roadway. You can find the bike path along SFD just before the San Geronimo School and then head back toward the hills, you will then find the new trail that contours across, somewhat above the golf course, you can then branch over to another trail that will pop you out right at the CeCe memorial, thus avoiding almost a mile of the most dangerous sections of roadway. It makes a great connection over to the Dickson Ridge Trail.

Access4Bikes is currently working with the Marin County Open Space to find opportunities for some new bike trails. We are encouraged by their response and desire to work with us. Perhaps soon in the future we will have more dedications to attend.

Over 300 people crowded into the San Rafael Community Center Saturday night (Nov. 10th) for the annual NorCal fundraiser. Tour de France commentator Bob Roll kept the audience laughing with his unique sense of humor. Inspiring speeches came from two NorCal riders, Kirsten Moore, a former Drake student, and Daniel Boyes from Marin Academy.
