Plant natives and pull weeds along Redwood Creek, near Dias Ridge Trail.
Jan 14, 2010 by TB

Share the Trail will be partnering with the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy to plant natives and pull weeds along Redwood Creek, between Muir Beach and Muir Woods. The work will help restore a healthy creek ecosystem, one that can better support the coho salmon and steelhead trout that swim up the creek to spawn in the Muir Woods. The project is close to the new Dias Ridge Trail, which will open to hikers, bikers and equestrians in the Spring.

When: Saturday, March 20 at 9:30 am
Where: Highway 1 near Muir Beach

40 Volunteers Show Up For Trail Work on the OVT!
Sept. 28, 2009 by TB

On Saturday, September 26, forty volunteers headed out to the Olema Valley Trail to do some much-needed maintenance. The workday was organized by Share the Trail, a new outdoor advocacy organization focusing on coalition building among various user groups and environmental organizations. It was a diverse group of volunteers, made up of men and women of varying ages. Some were seasoned trail builders, while others were out there for the first time.

Each of the forty trail workers put in two and a half hours of hard labor, for a combined contribution of 100 hours of volunteer service. The work included berm removal along the trails edge, drainage improvements, and removal of obsolete wood structures. The work refurbished a half mile of the Olema Valley Trail, one of the few shared-use trails in the park.

There was a picnic following the trail work, with hamburgers and sausages donated by Marin Sun Farms. Each trail worker received a coupon good for one free entrance to any national park, plus a volunteer patch. Everyone enjoyed themselves and the number one question at the end of the day was, “when are we going to do this again!”

Stay tuned!

Trail Work on the OVT
Aug. 3, 2009 by TB

The Olema Valley Trail is in Point Reyes National Seashore. It's a beautiful trail, with lush forests and pretty meadows. It's also one of the few multi-use trails in the park, and it is in need of some TLC.

Share the Trail is organizing a trail day and picnic. Hikers, bikers and equestrians will be working side by side to make some much needed improvements to the trail. These improvements will increase the longevity of the trail, so future generations have the same trail experience we have today. The IMBA Trail Care Crew will help with the project and will offer a Trailbuilding School, teaching sustainable trail design. There will be a picnic following the trailwork with great food, including hamburgers and sausages from Marin Sun Farms and locally made beverages!

What: Trailwork including brushing, berm removal and drainage improvements.
Where: Meet at the Pacific Coast Science & Learning Center on Hwy 1, between Olema and Dogtown.
When: Saturday, Sept. 26 - Trail work: 10 am - 2 pm  Picnic: 2:30 pm - 5 pm
Fee: FREE!
RSVP and questions - tomboss@mac.com or 415-272-2756

* Meet the IMBA Trail Care Crew on Friday, Sept. 25 in Fairfax 6-8 pm, at Gestalt Haus in Fairfax. Limited space, RSVP - tomboss@mac.com or 415-272-2756

* Ride the Olema Valley Trail on Sunday Sept. 27 with the IMBA TCC and the Forest Knolls Freewheelers. RSVP and questions - tomboss@mac.com or 415-272-2756

ABOUT THE TRAIL: The Olema Valley Trail meanders along the Olema Rift Zone, created by the San Andreas Fault. The San Andreas Fault runs through Bolinas Lagoon, the Olema Valley and up through Tomales Bay. In fact, the epicenter of the 1906 Great Earthquake was near Olema. As a result of seismic activity, the Olema Rift Zone features a very unique hydrology or drainage pattern. For about a mile in the Olema Valley, two creeks parallel each other and flow in opposite directions to the Pacific Ocean. Pine Gulch creek flows south and empties into Bolinas Lagoon, while Olema Creek flows north and drains into Tomales Bay. This is just one of the many wonders that await you along the Olema Valley Trail.

Dias Ridge Trail Update
Future Shared-use trail on NPS Land - to open in Spring!

Construction and realignment of the 1.5 mile Dias Ridge Trail segment on National Park Service land is now complete, but not yet open. This multi-use trail connects the Golden Gate Stables along Highway 1 to the Mt. Tamalpais State Park boundary. The eroded gullies of the former ranch road have been repaired and erosion control materials have been installed in order to protect the sensitive habitat within the Redwood Creek watershed. Restoration of the 1.2 mile ranch road is still underway. This winter, Trails Forever volunteers and youth from the North Bay Conservation Corps will be planting 25,000 coastal scrub and grassland plants that were grown by community volunteers in the Marin Headlands Native Plant Nursery.

The new Dias Ridge Trail segment will remain closed through winter 2009 and will open in spring 2010. The trail will be closed for this extended period to allow the trail to settle and compact, and for the new vegetation to become established. Closing new trails for the first winter after construction helps ensure a better and more stable trail in the long-term and protects water quality and wildlife habitat. Thank you for your patience and understanding during this transitional period.

The next phase of work will be the construction and realignment of the Dias Ridge Trail segment on Mt. Tamalpais State Park. This segment of the Dias Ridge Trail will also be closed until Spring, to reduce temptation to check out the new trail. We ask that you please respect the closure and we can all celebrate together when the trail opens in Spring. This is a big step forward, and it has been many years in the making.

For those of you who just can't wait, there will be special behind-the-scenes tour of the Dias Ridge Trail on each of the following days:

Saturday, August 15th: 10am-12pm
Sunday, September 20th: 10am-12pm
Saturday, October 17th: 3pm-5pm

Meet at the Muir Beach parking lot. Space will be limited on these hiking only events due to the delicate condition of the newly constructed trail. NPS understands there may be interest in bicycle or equestrian tours but the primary goal now is to ensure the trail is sustainable for the long-term enjoyment of all users once it opens. Please help support this goal.

Contact NPS at (415) 561-3054 or email trailsforever@parksconservancy.org to reserve a space on the walk or to find out more about the project or volunteering.

Middle Green Gulch - Uphill Only!
February 13, 2008 by TB

Share the Trail has received reports that mountain bikers are doing DOWN Middle Green Gulch trail, out near Muir Beach.  Middle Green Gulch is open to bikes in the UPHILL direction only.  Please observe the downhill closure in order to avoid having the trail closed to bikes entirely.  The trail runs through the Zen Center and they have been gracious in letting bikes ride through their property.  Let's return the favor and follow the rules.

The proper way to get down off of Coyote Ridge is to head west to Coastal Road, or north to Miwok, and then down Diaz Ridge Trail (see the Coast View map in our Loops and Trails section)

New Shared Use Trail on Marin County Open Space
November 28th, 2007 by LL

On a beautiful fall Saturday in late November,
the Top Flight Trail saw it's grand opening, and
the bikers and hikers were there to celebrate.
The trail is on Marin County Open Space in the French Ranch Preserve, and though a short trail (1/2 mile), it was a big construction effort due
to 4 bridges needing to be built in that short distance.

The trail essentially goes behind the San Geronimo Golf Course on the North side, and it is an excellent way to get off the busy roadway. You can find the bike path along SFD just before the San Geronimo School and then head back toward the hills, you will then find the new trail that contours across, somewhat above the golf course, you can then branch over to another trail that will pop you out right at the CeCe memorial, thus avoiding almost a mile of the most dangerous sections of roadway. It makes a great connection over to the Dickson Ridge Trail.

Access4Bikes is currently working with the Marin County Open Space to find opportunities for some new bike trails. We are encouraged by their response and desire to work with us. Perhaps soon in the future we will have more dedications to attend.
